Spanish Official Demands European Union Lifts Gay Blood Ban
A Spanish MEP has criticized the European Union countries that prohibit gays from donating blood – and is demanding that the European Commission takes action against this collective discrimination. The two countries specifically mentioned are the United Kingdom and France, which continue their ban on all gays because they are considered an 'at-risk' group in relation to HIV.

Pope Benedict XVI stops in Spain this weekend as part of his campaign to defend the traditional family, visiting a predominantly Roman Catholic country that allows gay marriage, divorce and abortion. Benedict has been denouncing gay marriage and other challenges to church doctrine in Europe and elsewhere — recently summed up by the Vatican as the "greatest threat ever" to the traditional family based on marriage between a man and a woman.

Spain became the third European country to legalize gay marriage Thursday in a parliament vote that left gay activists blowing kisses to lawmakers and the Catholic Church issuing calls for defiance. Just 24 hours after Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin’s push for legalized same-sex marriage got its final vote of approval Wednesday, Spain’s 350-seat Congress of Deputies, by a vote of 187-147 with four abstentions, approved the measure.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has defended a new law allowing gay couples to marry this week, in a veiled counter-attack on the Roman Catholic Church, which has urged Bishops and Catholics to resist the new law. Spain’s parliament gave initial approval to the law last month, causing an immediate backlash at the Spanish Bishops' Conference to step up its campaign against the measure.
